The short video below is an artifact from that I created as part of the MAET program at Michigan State. The prompt was to "...create a story that tells a little bit about what you believe about teaching, technology and teaching with technology." (MSU MAET Hybrid Year 1, 2018) The transcript can be found below.
21st century technology is transforming our world more quickly than ever before, and as educators, we have a responsibility to teach what is best about technology. Technology can unlock massive creative potential, it can create broad opportunities for global communication, and it makes available an incredible amount of information and knowledge at our fingertips.
However, as devices and connectivity become ubiquitous, we have an obligation to carefully evaluate new technologies before welcoming them into the classroom and our student’s lives. Any educational approach that integrates technology without careful consideration of content and pedagogy is ill-conceived. Furthermore, we need to appreciate that the current generation is experiencing a world unlike any that we have known. We have a responsibility to carefully and intentionally shepherd our students through a gauntlet of technology-related dangers, including addiction, social isolation, and escapism. We must remain focused on our learning objectives and the humanity of our students first and foremost, and then find ways to introduce the technological skills and tools which we hope will broaden their horizons, excite, and enliven them.
